her eyes travel the mirror, mapping
each glint of faded light, remembering
when its reflection once brought her pleasure.
she reaches out with trembling
fingers, touches the gilded edges
& releases a rusty smile.
lips mumble too-familiar words, conjuring
fuzzy memories of a youth long passed.
reliving the echoes of a childhood.
she glimpses heaven in the recesses
of her mind, projecting the stillness
of a calm heart upon the mirror.
her reflection quivers & shakes,
revealing an emptiness
in the glass.
she watches the images that flicker
on the silver surface, wondering
what they mean, hoping
for a kind prophecy.
she files away what she has seen, pictures
laced with words of a future time.
she backs away from the mirror,
turns her back on the mirror,
she steps back into the light.
